May 2013 President’s Message

As we go full on into spring and slowly start summer, food excites me more each day. Most of us that are chefs can look back in time and think of an event during this time of year where food was a wonderful memory.

For me I think of picking strawberries as a kid on Long Island, making fresh strawberry short cake. Fresh clams  from the bay; even some snapper turtle that we sold to restaurants for extra money. Upstate New York spring lamb meant dark gravy with rosemary and seasonal vegetables.

Nature has a way of waking us up during spring and giving us incredible colors and even better flavors. It’s a time to plant, harvest, and for chefs create. Spring is the beginning of much life, and with cooking a great time to revisit the past. Cook fresh foods, enjoy the weather and gifts all over our state.

Use this time to renew your love of food, share recipes and knowledge. Create a fire within yourself, get involved, grow, learn and share the thing that brought food into your life.

Our chapter has had some great experiences, most recently our sponsored student chef competition in Lake County. Either if you won a medal or  just  gained experience, it was successful with many people’s help. Imagine what we can accomplish with each member just giving a little effort, to promote our craft and the ACF Gulf to Lakes Chefs & Cooks Chapter . Our member culinary instructors all donate time and energy for the chapter outreach program at the Christian Care Center. We need more outreaches, better promotion of what we do and can achieve.

What do you want from ACF, our chapter, how we can serve you or create a great experience. Join us for our May BBQ. relax with friends, enjoy fellowship, rest a little and become revived. Become active in meetings, training and help start new outreaches to promote what we love, cooking.

On one last note remember July is our national convention in Las Vegas.
